Late summer and early fall are great times to
watch movies
. The days are starting to get shorter, the nights are getting colder, and you’re likely spending a lot more time inside than you did during the summer months. What else are you going to do besides lounge around your house in sweatpants, covered in a giant fleece blanket, while you
stream movies
? We can’t think of anything better.
Well, the only thing better than that scenario is if the aforementioned movies are also autumn themed. There’s no better way to get in the mood for cozy sweaters, crisp evenings, and pumpkin-spiced everything than a fall-themed movie marathon. To help you find the best that fall cinema has to offer, we listed 10 of our favorites below. Keep scrolling to see all of the autumnal, crunchy leaf-filled, chilly evening-centric movies.
Best Fall Movies
'Dead Poets Society'
In this drama, the late Robin Williams stars as an English teacher who teaches at an all-boys prep school known for its traditions and high standards. He uses less-than-traditional methods to reach his students, to the dismay of parents and the school.
'The Goonies'
This story of a group of friends in search of pirate gold during the early fall in Oregon is just as exciting and nostalgic today as it was when it came out in the '80s.
'October Sky'
In this film, Chris Cooper plays a coal miner who assumes his sons will follow in his footsteps. His two sons have different ideas. One gets a football scholarship and the other gets interested in rocket science.
'Friday Night Lights'
In some parts of the country (especially Texas), there are few things more important during the fall than Friday night football games. This movie centers around an Odessa, Texas, high school football team as it strives to win the state championship.
'Rushmore'
Wes Anderson has made a whole slew of movies since this story of a teenager falling in love with his teacher at a prep school was released in 1998. But, in our opinion, few of them are better than this fall-themed film.
'Good Will Hunting'
A man named Will Hunting with a secret genius-level IQ works as a janitor at MIT. He solves a seemingly unsolvable math equation and ends up being found by a professor who wants to help him. When he gets arrested, he’s able to get out of it by being treated by a therapist (played by Robin Williams in a career-best role).
'Knives Out'
This movie, which takes place in the fall, centers around the mysterious death of novelist Harlan Thrombey, the investigation, and all of the potential suspects.
'Legends of the Fall'
This movie is centered around a family living in the Montana wilderness in the early 1900s. Everything changes when one of the sons dies in World War I and the two remaining brothers fall in love with his fiancée.
'Autumn in New York'
With a name like
Autumn in New York
, you should have a pretty good idea of what this movie is about. This is the story of Will Keane, a well-known playboy and restauranteur (Richard Gere) who meets a woman (Winona Ryder) who changes everything.
'When Harry Met Sally'
Ten years after Harry Burns and Sally Albright shared a car ride from Chicago to New York in which they argued whether or not men and women can be friends, they find each other again at a book store and try to be friends without having any romantic feelings. Things only get more complicated from there.
